Apex Math Learning Center is founded on the principle that every student has the ability to succeed in Math. Apex Math tutoring provides the right instruction at the right time and with the guidance and support from Apex Math instructors, every student can reach their full potential.
A student learns math by becoming proficient with initial foundation skills and then adding to these foundation skills as students advance into each higher grade level. When a student misses understanding a math skill, they progressing get further behind in math as that math skill is needed in becoming proficient in higher math.
For example:
Should a 1st grade student misses being proficient in addition or a 3rd grade student missing being proficient multiplication, they become frustrated and confused by math. Unfortunately, if not immediately addressed, the student falls further behind, loses confidence in their ability, and ultimately shuts down and stops learning math altogether. A typically symptom of this is when a student needs help with homework or fails to turn in homework assignments.
At Apex Math, we believe students that have fallen behind can succeed in math. The Apex Math team understands this happens too frequently and has a process to address it.
There are 3 components to the Apex Math process for getting student caught up and ahead in math.
They are:
Assessment
First step is the Apex Math Assessment process. This identifies the specific skills the student is missing. For example, the student may have learned 60% of the skills in 3rd grade and is missing 40%. The Apex Math assessment identifies those missing 40% and creates their Apex Math Learning Plan to address each one. This allows Apex Math to focus on the missing skills instead of making the student redo all of 3rd grade math. That is, the student only needs to work on those specific skills that they did not understand or incorrectly answered in the assessment. Why waste time on things they all ready know. Note, if the student is not given a chance to learn the missing 40%, they will be even less proficient when they are enter their next grade level. Remember, math is different than other school subjects. Math builds as a student advances through each grade and next grade level requires proficiency learned in the previous grade levels.
Learning Plan
From the Assessment, the student's Apex Math Learning Plan is created which identifies the Apex Math curriculum uniquely tailored for the student.. Each skill in the the student's Learning Plan is ordered to makes sure the student is not being asked to learn a topic they are not ready for. For example, it makes no sense attempting to teach division, if the student is not proficient in multiplication.
Excellent Curriculum
The Apex Math Curriculum is comprised of separate topics (skills) as identified in the student's Learning Plan. The language used and exercises are specifically designed to be understandable by the student. As the student progresses through the exercises, they become confident as their proficiency improves. The exercise set printed out for the student, is typically 7-12 pages, and students uses pencil to complete. Apex Math believes learning by pencil and paper leads to a better understanding than using a "screen". Each topic (skill) includes an "Expert Check" at the end to confirm that the student thoroughly learned the topic. They are expected to get 100% on this check.
Trained Instructors
Apex Math strongly believes that not only is excellent curriculum needed to help students learn math, instructors knowledgeable in math are critical. Instructors make sure students are correctly progressing through the curriculum, guiding the students if they are having difficulty, checking each answer on each page to make sure they are correct, and providing help and encouragement as needed. When it comes to math. the saying, "Practice make perfect" is not entirely correct - it is "Perfect practice that makes perfect".
When the student finally reaches the last page, the "Expert Check", the instructor confirms that the student is ready. At this time the student is to complete the Expert Check without any help and is expected to get 100%. As students progress through each topic and demonstrates 100% proficiency int the Expert Check, their confidence builds as they realize they can do math. Rarely, 100% is not achieved,. However, should this happen, the instructor can immediately determine why (the student should thoroughly know the topic) and what the student needs before continue on.
While the student is completing the assessment, the center director can go over with the parent/guardian Apex Math, why it works, and answer any questions.
